Dormitory and Cloister Asbeck

The dormitory dates from around 1200 and still shows Romanesque architectural features. It is the southern part of the west wing of the Asbeck cloister complex. The remaining Romanesque window frame, due to its location extending into the roof slope, formerly illuminated a room with an open roof structure. The current ceiling was likely only installed when the dormitory was abandoned in favor of individual living areas for the
canons.
In its full extent, the building reached up to the collegiate church. It was not until around 1901 that it was reduced to a third of its original size. From this time also comes the north brick facade that had to be erected at that time. Since then, the building has served as a residence for the Asbeck family Thiemann. This family provided the caretaker and organist of the parish community of St. Margareta for several generations. The location of the house allowed the family direct access to the church grounds.

In 1999, the local heritage association Asbeck e. V. managed to acquire the building with the help of the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation. Between 2003 and 2004, it was restored to its present state with the help of numerous friends and institutions.
