Vechtesee Schüttorf

The Vechte flows west past Schöppingen and flows through Metelen. In Welbergen, the Gauxbach flows from the right, and the Vechte turns northeast to Wettringen. Together with the Steinfurter Aa,[5] which flows into it a little later, it breaks through the 20 to 40 metre rising Saale glacial terminal moraines of the Rhine Heights and reaches Lower Saxony shortly afterwards. Near Schüttorf, its lowland borders the westwardly rising Bentheim Ridge, a sandstone range in continuation of the Teutoburg Forest. Through partly boggy sandy plains, it reaches Nordhorn and Neuenhaus, where it is joined by the Dinkel as the largest German tributary. A few kilometres further northwest, it passes Hoogstede near the confluence of the Lee, then Ringe and Emlichheim. Here the Vechte turns west. It has already reached a water flow of 18 m³/s here and has overcome a gradient of 96 metres in altitude to the state border.
