The road runs from Eskdale and the Duddon Valley in the Lake District with an average gradient of 13%, but the section approaching the pass reaches 33%. It is so treacherous in the winter that it is closed for several months. Chimney Bank is another seriously steep hill. It has an average grade of 11.9% and is often included in the Tour of Britain cycle race. The ascent is 1.47 km long and the maximum slope is 33%.
