Ascent of Hardknott Pass . Maximum gradient is about 30%, it claims to be the steepest hill in England. The many hairpin bends on Hard Knott Pass will have you breaking out in a cold sweat. Built by the Romans in the 2nd century, it shares the title of England's steepest driveable road with Chimney Bank in North Yorkshire. Both have a maximum grade of 33%. The road runs from Eskdale and the Duddon Valley in the Lake District with an average gradient of 13%, but the section approaching the pass reaches 33%. It is so treacherous in the winter that it is closed for several months. Chimney Bank is another seriously steep hill. It has an average grade of 11.9% and is often included in the Tour of Britain cycle race. The ascent is 1.47 km long and the maximum slope is 33%.
