The building of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is like the Roman God Janus with the two heads facing in opposite direction: it looks backwards at the Acropolis (the past) and looks forward towards the sea and the future. This complex is designed by the top architect Renso Piano. At the top of the complex, to the south, the roof soars to a height of 47 metres: made of ferro-concrete meauring 100 by 100 metres, it is borne on slender columns and steel bracing, and supports an extensive area of solar panels. This Energy Canopy is lined with 5,560 phtovoltaic panels, sufficient to generate 2,280 kWh of electricity annually, making the complex almost energy sufficient.
