Height 830m, this is our highest point along the slopes of the
Monte Subasio
The Monte Subasio is a 1290-meter high mountain in the Italian Apennines.
The mountain rises to the east of the well-known town of Assisi. The pink-tinted rock of the mountain has been used for the construction of various Franciscan buildings in this place. Wood has been taken from the extensive forests on the slopes, and the water from the Fontemaggio spring has been used as drinking water since Roman times.
Since 1995, the mountain and a large area to the east of it have been declared a protected nature reserve, the Parco del Monte Subasio. The bare summit of the Monte Subasio is flattened and shows various karst features such as dolines. In the forests on the slopes, trees such as oak, holm oak, stone oak, hornbeam, and maple can be found. Some animal species that inhabit the area include the fox, wildcat, boar, wood pigeon, and badger.
