The Grand Courant state nature reserve extends along the right bank of the Sambre, downstream of Thuin. It consists of former hay meadows occupying a narrow alluvial bench at the foot of the Bois Jean Boinval, near the Grand Courant dam. Partly wooded, the site includes a sedge bed with river bulrush (Carex riparia), a reed bed with common reed (Phragmites australis), seepage areas with opposite-leaved golden-saxifrage (Chrysosplenium oppositifolium), a megaphorbia planted with poplars, and thickets of willows and alders. The local fauna is poorly known due to difficult access. A significant population of Desmoulins' whorl snail (Vertigo moulinsiana), a tiny snail highlighted by the Natura 2000 decree, has been recently noted, as well as the reed beetle (Anisosticta novemdecimpunctata) and other interesting beetles.
Public access: The site is difficult to access. There is no passable path or information panel.
Type: Site of Great Biological Interest (SGIB)
