It was built around 1230 by Otto I of Schaumberg, who subsequently called himself Otto of Schauenstein after his new castle in the Franconian Forest. He had been a ministerial of the Dukes of Andechs-Meranien since 1222 and died in 1237. His son Eberhard I and his grandsons Tuto and Heinrich III of Schauenstein owned the castle until 1271. After that, the castle and the court of Schauenstein passed to Heinrich's daughter. She married Konrad von Wolfstriegel, thereby bringing Schauenstein into the possession of this family and thus into the sphere of influence of the lords of Weida and later the burgraves of Nuremberg. Afterwards, it became the seat of the district officials of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, whose first was Erhart von Machwitz.
The castle has been home to the Upper Franconian Fire Brigade Museum and the Schauenstein Local History Museum since 1988.
