The Sallandse Heuvelrug is a moraine that originated about 150,000 years ago in the penultimate ice age (Salien). Prior to the ice cover, large rivers had deposited thick layers of sand and gravel there. When the ice in the Saalien advanced to this part of the Netherlands, these river deposits were pushed up in high moraines, such as the Sallandse Heuvelrug.
n the last ice age (Weichselien) there was no land ice in the Netherlands, but there was a subarctic climate. Due to icy sandstorms, layers of cover sand were deposited, especially on the flanks of the Sallandse Heuvelrug.
The hills have been largely reforested from the end of the 19th century to capture the shifting sands. Production forests with coniferous trees were mainly planted. Since the end of the 20th century, the heathland has been increased again from the point of view of cultural history and nature management.
