In 1799 Jo[h]annes Matthias van Rhijn, former resident at the court of the Sultan of Mataram, bought the former havezate Dieze near Dalfsen. He named the country estate he purchased after the country of Mataram in the former Dutch East Indies. At the same time, Van Rhijn also bought the nearby De Horte estate. In 1828 both De Horte and Mataram were sold to Johan Adriaan baron van Fridagh. In 1858, the mayor of Zwolle and later president of the Senate, Jan Arend Godert baron de Vos van Steenwijk, became the owner of the Mataram estate. He had the existing house demolished in 1901. The current buildings date from 1905 when his son Jan Arend de Vos van Steenwijk had a new house built there. The pillars at the entrance date back to the 18th century. This entrance is recognized as a national monument because of its age and its significance as a marker of the entrance to the estate. The entire estate is surrounded by a moat.
