Il 15 agosto 1944 un bombardiere francese B-26 Marauder e un B-17 americano tentarono di distruggere il ponte ferroviario e il ponte stradale che sovrastano la Durance a Sisteron. Il tempo era sfavorevole e si mancò i ponti. Uno dei bombardieri fece accidentalmente cadere diverse bombe sulla città. Queste colpirono tra l'altro una chiesa piena causando 100 morti. Anche la cittadella fu gravemente danneggiata. Due giorni dopo si tentò nuovamente di distruggere i ponti. E questa volta con successo.
