Caret cross

This cross on the driveway to the castle commemorates a murder from the 18th century. Wauters Carette is said to have succumbed here to a number of stab wounds to the chest. This cross is one of the rare memorial crosses for murder or accident. In the Kortrijk area, there is also Slosses Cross in Bellegem, which commemorates the execution of the Slosse brothers in 1663. Across from the Marksesteenweg stands the memorial of the Boerenkrijg. This commemorates the murder of 3 Markenaren by French soldiers in 1798. At the site of the Markebeke, next to the inn De Slabbaert, there was a brewery at that time. Curious about the noise and the sound of hooves, some people from the brewery came to the door to see what was happening. Startled by the sight of the French riders, they fled inside and locked the door. However, the French broke it down and killed three people.
