Along the steepest river in Belgium in Modave

The Hoyoux valley is characterized by the fact that this river has the steepest slope of a river in Belgium (consult the attraction about this). In addition, a special geological phenomenon can be observed: the travertines that cause waterfalls in the river and are still growing in this place.

The presence of the RAVeL line 126 makes this valley a pleasant walking and cycling region. This walk also visits the Triffoy valley , a particularly picturesque tributary of the Hoyoux.

Start at the entrance to the "Carrière Bois Jean-Etienne" quarry in Modave along the N942, with a bus stop (TEC).

We cross the RAVeL and walk to the entrance of the quarry where we turn right. What follows is a steep climb to the top of the plateau. Sugar beets are often grown on the arable fields that we then encounter. With the presence of the sugar factory in Huy, a lucrative cultivation.

It now descends permanently to the Triffoy valley, which we follow further down to the RAVeL near the château-ferme de Royseux with its legend about the devil (see the related attraction ).

We are now back in the Hoyoux valley. A little further on we find one of the most beautiful combinations of the travertines of the Hoyoux. Unfortunately private and only visible through the branches of the trees and therefore better in the seasons when the trees have no leaves...
