Did you know that Philip the Bold, the Burgundian unexpectedly died in Halle. He passed away on April 27, 1404. The sudden death of Philip the Bold, however, brought financial problems. The duke turned out not to have enough money to cover the ongoing expenses. His sons had to pawn silverware, and his widow Margaret shamefully placed her purse, keyring, and belt on the coffin, a symbolic gesture by which she renounced her rights to his earthly possessions. In the end, the Charterhouses of Herne were willing to provide a habit in which Philip wished to be buried.

This route winds along the path that the shroud of Philip the Bold followed between Herne and Halle, and then with the body to Brussels. We make a loop back to Herne.

After his death, his body was transferred to Brussels, where it was prepared and embalmed for several weeks. Subsequently, the body of Philip the Bold, founder of the Burgundian Valois dynasty and one of the most powerful princes of France, was buried in the crypt of the Charterhouse monastery of Champmol.
