At Access Point Pietersheim, you start between the castle, the water fortress, and green lanes: the perfect beginning of this journey. Soon you cycle along three striking waterways – the Albert Canal, the South Willems Canal, and the Meuse – which shape this landscape entirely. In Riemst, you glide past impressive marl walls that tower high above the deeply carved Albert Canal.
In Kanne, you notice the marl quarries and Chateau Neercanne shines, built with stones from the same ground. Later on the route, the Meuse surprises with wide floodplains, Meuse villages, and soothing vistas. The Maas Valley river park unfolds here with gravel lakes, herb-rich banks, and grazing herds of wild horses or cattle. In Oud-Rekem, you cycle back in time between the castle, small churches, and the historical museum pharmacy. Lookout points, picnic benches, and terraces provide moments of pure tranquility along the way and bring you back to the pace of the gently rippling Meuse.
