The Rupel region is known for its brickmaking past. Yet not only bricks came out of the kiln here. At the beginning of the 20th century, tile production also belonged to the absolute world top. The Gilliot factory in Hemiksem produced floor and wall tiles for standard use and unique, artistically high-quality tile panels for special orders. For a long time, it was the largest and most modern tile factory in Europe. As a major employer, the factory has meant a great deal to the prosperity of the region. Because of its good value for money and attractive decors, Gilliot tiles were sought after at home and abroad.

Here and there in the streets you can still find traces of the beautiful Gilliot tiles. Reasons enough to go to the cradle, Hemiksem, in search of remnants of this fascinating past.

The Hemiksem train station is 1 km on foot.- Waterbus/ferry service:The waterbus and ferry service (Hemiksem-Bazel) are 1.4 km on foot.- Car: There is parking near the abbey (accessible via Nijverheidsstraat) and at the party hall Depot Deluxe.
