Kursächsische distance column Altenberg

The listed protected course Saxon distance column Geising is part of the post mile columns, which were erected on the order of Elector Frederick Augustus I of Saxony by the land and border commissioner Adam Friedrich Zürner in the first half of the 18th century in the Electorate of Saxony. It is located at the train station in the district of Geising in the Osterzgebirge town of Altenberg in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge.
Originally, a distance column was to be erected in both neighboring towns of Alt-Geising and Neu-Geising. After a request from both towns, an agreement was reached in 1728 to set up a column in the Altmarkt in Neu-Geising. The column was manufactured by Ulrich Schindler in Pirna and was erected at the end of 1734. After the column was to be moved to the Neumarkt in 1857, it was completely demolished due to cost reasons, and the stones were sold as building material. The base was presumably used in the construction of the war memorial of 1870/71. On the occasion of the 525th anniversary celebration of Geising, a copy of the distance column was made according to the specifications of the research group Course Saxon Post Mile Columns and was ceremoniously unveiled on July 12, 1987, in front of the then HO restaurant Geisinghof.
