Monschau - Monastery Route (signposted)

On the advice of the tourism association, we started the monastery trail "in reverse" from the parking lot on the outskirts of Monschau. The monastery path is perfectly marked in both directions, but according to the friendly staff member at the info point, the route is slightly less difficult when going counterclockwise. In any case, the hike begins with a steep ascent to the "Engelsley" and "Teufelsley", two rocky points with panoramic views of the Eifel. Then we descend into the beautiful valley of the Perlenbach. The reservoir and its surroundings truly gave us "Canada vibes". Additionally, we were already able to see some yellow and white daffodils along the hiking trail that, in spring (April-May), transform the meadows into a colorful, fragrant sea of flowers. Along the way, we pass the Norbertus Chapel and the Reichenstein Monastery. After the monastery, we follow the Roer for a while and then ascend via a narrow, winding (and steep) hiking path to the imposing rock of Ehrensteinsley. From here, we head back down to Monschau.

Conclusion: The hiking trails of this monastery route are excellently marked, challenging, varied, and the landscape changes constantly, enchanting us time and again. We found this hike an absolute must!
