ON19 Muonio-Kautokeino

19th stage from Oekene to the North Cape: from Muonio to Kautokeino. Winding roads through a more open tundra landscape in Finnish and Norwegian Lapland, 158 kilometers with 887 meters of elevation. Now you are really in the far north and you drive even further north through Finnish and Norwegian Lapland.

You follow the E8, which more or less follows the valley of the Muonio rivers to Palejoensuu. In Palejoensuu, at km 25, we turn off onto the N°93 towards Hetta. In Hetta, the N°93 turns left and you continue on the N°93 to Kivilompolo. Just past Kivilompolo, at km 88, you reach the Norwegian border. You continue to follow the N°93 in Norway to Kautokeino.

Kautokeino is a municipality in the Norwegian province Finnmark. It is by far the largest municipality in the country in terms of area. The municipality has about 3000 inhabitants. The majority of the inhabitants speak Sami as their mother tongue. The majority of the municipality is part of the Finnmarksvidda. This high plateau is particularly known as the area where the Saami keep their reindeer herds. In the southeastern part of the municipality, near the Finnish border, lies the Øvre Anárjohka National Park.
