Bronze plaque by Jean Cocteau - Menton

The bronze plaque of Jean Cocteau , placed on the facade of the Musée du Bastion in Menton, was designed by the artist Arlette Somazzi and made after his death.

The plaque depicts an elocated bronze medallion head of Jean Cocteau , mounted on a rough stone plinth near the entrance to the Bastion Museum. Encased within it is the text: "I rest with you" —a quotation that alludes to Cocteau's deep connection to Menton. The monument highlights both the face and spirit of Cocteau, connecting his artistic legacy to the urban limestone of the Bastion.

The closed medal symbolizes Cocteau's eternal presence in Menton , and ties in with his own work of restoration and decoration of the Bastion.

Jean Cocteau (1889–1963) was an exceptionally versatile French artist: writer, poet, playwright and filmmaker, illustrator, designer, and painter . From the 1950s onward, Cocteau frequently stayed in Menton. He left an indelible artistic mark on the city: the Salle des Mariages in Menton City Hall was designed by Cocteau, and Le Bastion Museum , which he himself furnished with his work, has since become a museum.
