Mueang Khuk

Wiang Khuk (or 'Meuang Khuk') is located on the Mekong banks directly opposite Say Fong (fifteen kilometres upstream from Nongkhai), and shows evidence of continuous occupation until at least the late eighteenth century. As we have seen, Wiang Khuk had been a Khmer centre, but was occupied and reconstructed by the Lao. Wiang Khuk functioned as a key riverside port and trading center with Indian, Malay and Chinese merchants playing an important role in trade. By the seventeenth century it was recorded by the Dutch trader Van Wuysthoff as the most important entrepot in Lan Xang, connecting trade routes across the northern Khorat Plateau and the riverine trade to Cambodia.
