Franciscan Monastery Attendorn

The Franciscan Monastery of the Sorrowful Mother in Attendorn was founded in the 17th century by Franciscan Observants. During the Second World War, the building complex located on today's Klosterplatz was destroyed by an explosion.

On 5 September 1636, the Archbishop of Cologne, Ferdinand of Bavaria, granted permission to the Franciscans of the Thuringian Order Province, which had been refounded in 1633 after the Reformation, to establish a settlement in Attendorn. Two years later, the city council agreed to this, but at the same time emphasized that the fathers should teach the youth in the "liberal arts" and in Catholic doctrine. For this purpose, the Franciscans now rented a house in the city and also set up a chapel there.
