Weather lock

The Weersluis is one of the three locks between the Vecht and the Loosdrechtse plassen. These locks were already built in the 17th century, to transport peat from the peat lakes to the Vecht. The Vecht was not only the most important transport route. From the end of the 17th century (Old Dutch water line) and even more so in the 19th century (Nieuwer Hollandse Waterlinie), the Vecht supplied the water to flood the lower meadows. At the time of the Water Line, the locks, together with newly constructed culverts and inundation locks, served to allow water from the river to flow into the land and to maintain the water level. By closing the lock gates or stacking bulkhead beams in the inundation locks, the water was prevented from flowing back into the Vecht.
