Touristisch bedeutend sind neben dem hohen Freizeit- und Erholungswert der beiden Ruhrstauseen Hengstey- und Harkortsee sowie der bewaldeten Ardeyhöhen unter anderem das Bachviertel als historische Altstadt mit vielen Fachwerkhäusern und der talüberspannende, gut 30 m hohe Ruhr-Viadukt.
Herdecke liegt direkt an der Ruhr mit ihren beiden Stauseen Hengsteysee und Harkortsee, dem Ruhrtal und der Ardeypforte. Landschaftlich gehört Herdecke zu den nordwestlichen Ausläufern des Sauerlandes und wird dem niederbergisch-märkischen Hügelland zugerechnet. Herdecke liegt auf einer Höhe von 80 bis 274 m ü. NHN.
