Plugstreet 14-18 Experience

This interpretation centre about the First World War is located near the British Memorial in Ploegsteert, Belgium. The center gives you a glimpse into the lives of the soldiers and the civilian population. You enter the center through a glass pyramid in the middle of the Bos van Ploegsteert. Because the pyramid is also located partly underground, you get the feeling that you are entering the now inaccessible Catacombs of Ploegsteert. The museum trail. A 400 m² high-tech space accurately shows the positions of the British and German troops in Komen-Waasten during the First World War. Each visitor experiences in a humane, interactive and emotional way the living conditions and events that civilians and soldiers faced during the four-year occupation. You can view authentic and never-before-seen archival documents in 4 languages: French, Dutch, English and German. In collaboration with the Australian government, 3 themes involving Australian soldiers are also addressed, such as the Battle of Messina, the catacombs and the war winter of 1917-1918. The Interpretation Centre will also regularly host local and itinerant exhibitions. After a visit to the interpretation centre, the visitor will have the opportunity to discover the landscape and the traces of the war that are still present, as well as other memorial sites in Ploegsteert, Waasten and Komen.
