Pajottenland

Did you know that the name Pajottenland only dates from the 19th century. It comes from Payot. which was originally the Walloon name for a soldier from his own region, in contrast to the strange Austrian soldiers. The word is a derivation of the region. The word Pajottenland was coined by the Lennik lawyer Frans-Joseph De Gronckel. He used the word Pajottenland, under the pseudonym Franciscus Josephus Twyfelloos, in a romantic and playful writing published in the first half of the 19th century.
