This Meetjesland Café Route of 10 km starts at the iconic green square in front of the town hall and leads you to the Kleemkapel, a large neo-Gothic chapel in Kaprijke. The chapel has existed for 250 years and is dedicated to Mary. Through field paths and quiet lanes, you walk back to the center where you can enjoy a well-deserved break. From the terrace of Café Den Hippoliet, you overlook the entire historic square that played a very important role as a trading center in medieval Flanders for the famous cloth for which trading ships from Italy and the northern Hanseatic cities sailed to our coasts. Kaprijke was then a city, and you can see that in the 16th-century town hall, but also the square and the Voorstraat (a former green) is a relic of this period.
