Hike to the Bayehon Waterfall

The hike to the Bayehon Waterfall is really fun and doable for everyone. There are several routes to follow from the starting point. The starting point is the beautiful watermill "Moulin du Bayehon". This can be found at the beginning of the village of Longfaye, heading towards Ovifat. At the parking lot, there is an informational board with the various hiking routes. There is a red and a green hiking route. The green hike is 12.6 km long and you have to follow the green rectangles. For the red hike of 9 km, you naturally need to follow the red rectangles.

Whichever route you choose, you will surely enjoy! The hiking trails are well passable but can be muddy after heavy rainfall. The waterfall is about 1.5 km from the starting point. You can also choose to just walk this distance and then turn back. But we do not recommend this as you will miss out on wonderful sections! Of course, the waterfall is the highlight of the hike. Located at an altitude of 510 meters, it is the highest navigable waterfall in Belgium for kayakers.

The hike begins at the beautiful Moulin deu Bayehon. Here you can take a quick restroom break before starting the hike. From the village, you walk into the narrow valley via a steep path. Then you come across a wooden bridge and walk along the Bayehon river. Depending on the season, the river will either gurgle calmly or rage wildly. In the summer months, it will be a peaceful gurgling.

Hiking in the Bayehon Valley

At the end of the valley, you will reach the waterfall. This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Eastern Cantons. The landscape is idyllic and the lush flora and fauna make for a stunning whole. The water cascades down more than 9 meters. It is lovely to dip your feet in the large pool. You can climb the hill and then you have a nice view of the waterfall from above. Here also stands the Old Oak, an ancient tree, which you pass on your way to the sources of the Bayehon.

The route continues through beautiful pine forests and over peat bogs where wooden walkways are sometimes laid out. Be careful, as these can be slippery. Then you cross a main road and walk towards the "Fagne de Setay". This part of the High Fens is known for its marshes. The flora is truly unique, especially in spring when you can enjoy the splendor of the flowers. Next, we follow the signs until we arrive in Longfaye. From here, it's just a short distance back to the starting point, the Moulin du Bayahon. Here you can relax and enjoy Ardennes specialties.
