(D)Peat Museum

The Hochmoor has a small but fine museum in a former village school, the (D)Peat Museum. Visitors can follow step by step the transformation of a natural landscape into a cultural landscape. Starting from the powerful peat profile that has developed over millennia, the by no means monotonous peat landscape with its diverse flora and fauna is presented.

The hard work in the peat - from the beginnings of peat cutting to industrial work in the peat - is illustrated not only by tools and clothing but also by impressive photos. Images of steam engines and large plows show the progress of technology in reclaiming the peat areas. That peat was not only used as a fuel or for soil improvement certainly belongs to the surprises of a visit. Educational materials for school classes and children's groups invite research and discoveries.
