Gentle hills, fresh fish and a natural healing area
The Wendland borders the Altmark in Saxony-Anhalt to the south of Lüchow. Here runs the former German-German border, along which today the nature reserve "Green Belt" stretches. The Lemgow in Wendland is a landscape that undulates. The Arendsee in the Altmark is the largest natural lake in Saxony-Anhalt, covering over five square kilometers and situated in the middle of a landscape protection area. In 1685, the mill of the town sank into the lake during a salt dome collapse, which gave it its present oval shape. It is the largest collapse lake in northern Germany, with the charming town of Arendsee stretching along its shore. Among its attractions are the "Gustaf Nagel Area" and the monastery in Arendsee founded in 1183, a Benedictine convent, of which the Romanesque monastery church built from 1185 still stands today.
