A la fi del 2013 comptava amb 1879 inhabitants. a una superfície de 51,66 quilòmetres quadrats. És el municipi més poblat de l'amt de Ludwigslust-Land. És regat pels rius Streubach i Kraaker Mühlenbach, que pertanyen a la conca del Sude. El punt culminant és el Mühlenberg de 56 metres sobre el nivell del mar.
L'estació va ser desafectada el 2013 i l'edifici venut a una empresa privada, malgrat els esforços del consistori que volia adquirir-lo per a instal·lar-hi un museu de la història local. Continua tenint una parada sense personal a la línia del ferrocarril R2 Wismar-Berlín-Cottbus. Rastow es troba al marge de la regió de protecció paisagistíca del Lewitz.
