A whale in the city. The St. Donatus Park and surroundings.

A whale in the city? Certainly, this is possible in Leuven. This walk allows you to enjoy the area around St. Donatus Park, one of the most beautiful city parks in Flanders. We not only see a beautiful mural of a whale in the kiosk, but it is definitely worth checking out the skeleton of the Greenland whale, located nearby in the Museum of Zoology.

We tell the history of the park, the romantic ruins of the first city walls, point out some beautiful trees, pause at several statues, and also look at some interesting buildings in the adjacent streets.

We start at the entrance of Vlamingstraat, but there is an entrance on either side. The distances are so small that, like your 19th-century predecessors, you can take your time to stroll, sit quietly on a bench, nap on the lawns, or let the children enjoy the playground. Not only the playground, but also the old city walls, the accessible tower, and the zoology museum will certainly fascinate children.

The city park is a fifteen-minute walk from the station and the heart of the city. Public transport is not an issue.

The paths are unpaved but easily navigable due to the abundance of dolomite lime and are even quite dry after a rain shower. There seems to be no problem for wheelchair users;

And those who know Leuven know that catering is not an issue. Nearby, there is a well-known vegetarian restaurant, and in the adjacent squares to the university library, there are plenty of dining and drinking options.
