New Lübbenau

The village has 378 inhabitants and is located east of the Spree River in the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The small waterway Neulübbenauer Kahnfahrt leads from the village to the Spree. The federal highway 179 runs through the village. The village mayor is Lothar Lorenz.
The founding of Neu Lübbenau took place in the 18th century. The initiative is believed to have originated from Frederick William I of Prussia, who, following the example of the Lübbenaus located further south and not belonging to Prussia, desired a cultivation of cucumbers in Prussia as well. He is said to have been annoyed by the high costs incurred for cucumbers used to supply the Prussian troops. After a stay by the king in Lübben, the plans are said to have become more concrete. In 1729, the order was given to settle farmers in the sparsely populated Unterspreewald. Prussia recruited about 40 farmers residing in Lübbenau and settled them in what is now Neu Lübbenau. The place was initially referred to as "Libbenauerei im Schadowschen Busch". From 1751, the village was named Neu Lübbenau in memory of the old homeland.
