Eglise catholique de Crastatt

The church of Saint Augustin is located in the center of the village of Crastatt and dates from several periods. It is composed of a single nave with three bays ending on a choir tower of square plan, dating from the 13th century and adjoining the current sacristy. The old nave is located between the present nave and the choir tower. The entrance facade is a gable facade with a semi-circular portal with buttresses and a staircase. The portal is surmounted by a triangular pediment housing a statuette of Saint Augustine, patron saint of the church. The choir tower is composed of three levels of elevation, pierced with bays. Its lower levels and the level of the bell chamber must be from the 13th century, while a level was added in the 14th century with defensive functions, a parapet walk and a frieze of arches pierced with battlements. The nave was transformed into a sacristy during the 19th century and the cemetery was fortified, although it was not originally, the village being surrounded by a ditch "Dorfgraben" and perhaps a hedge which made the fortification of the church more resistant. In the 19th century, the construction of a new place of worship was proposed and the project was born 20 years later. The work began in 1883. The new church is thus in a neo-Romanesque style.
