Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Machame route - Day 1 - Machame Gate - Machame Camp

Day 1: Machame Gate (1800m) - Machame Camp (3000m) - 10.3km

To get to the start we drive from Moshi with a nice view of the mountain via Machame Road to Machame Gate . We pass some small settlements with houses, churches, schools and many banana plantations. There are also shops next to the road where one can apparently get supplies. As expected, fresh meat is also hanging in the open air...

At Machame gate you can register in the large logbook.

The trek begins through the rainforest on a winding path along the ridge. The trail is still quite easy : a winding forest road that rises slightly and is in good shape. Where the slope becomes steeper, steps have been made with wood in the road. After 2 hours we pass a rest area after a slightly steeper part. There is even a toilet here, a small wooden barrack with a wooden floor with a hole in it.

The porters , who first divided and repacked everything after our departure, pass us by . The last of our group shouts on which side of the road we should go so that the porters have free passage. Kushoto or shoto is left, kulia is right.

At Machame Camp the rainforest ends and the vegetation gradually changes to high shrubs (heather zone). At a metal hut , we all have to register in a book.
