Tropea est une commune de la province de Vibo Valentia dans la région Calabre. Elle se situe à l’extrême sud-ouest de l'Italie.
L'histoire de Tropea commence à l'époque romaine, lorsque le long de sa côte, Sextus Pompée défait Octavius. Dans le sud de Tropea, les Romains avaient construit un port de commerce, dans la localité de Formicoli , mentionnée par Pline l'Ancien et Strabon.
