En la mitologia grega, es menciona a la Ilíada, on Homer anomena "el Pelió de fulles que es mouen". Pirítou, el rei dels làpites hi va combatre contra els centaures i els va matar. Píndar, a la tercera de les Pítiques, expressa la seva tristesa per no saber si el centaure Quiró seguia regnant a les valls del Pelió.
