Ferrara és un municipi italià capital de la província homònima, dins la regió d'Emília-Romanya. L'any 2007 tenia 133.591 habitants.
Situada a la plana d'Emilia, a la vora del Po de Volano —que separa la ciutat del burg medieval de Sant Giorgio i delimita la frontera amb els nous assentaments contemporanis al sud de la muralla—, la ciutat té una estructura urbanística que es remunta al segle xiv, quan era governada per la família dels Este. Ferrara viu la seva edat d'or a la baixa edat mitjana i el Renaixement, sota el govern de la família Este, època en què es transforma en un centre artístic de gran importància, no només a italià sinó també a nivell europeu, i arriba a rebre personalitats com Ludovico Ariosto i Torquato Tasso, Nicolau Copèrnic i Paracelsus, Andrea Mantegna i Tiziano, Pico della Mirandola i Pietro Bembo.
