Itàlia es convertí en el segon país a organitzar una Copa del Món per segona vegada, ja que havia organitzat l'edició de 1934. 24 seleccions nacionals participaren en un torneig amb diverses sorpreses, com la participació de Camerun que aconseguí ser el primer equip africà en arribar fins als quarts de final, arribant a ser coneguts com els "lleons indomables". La final es disputà per segona vegada consecutiva per Argentina i Alemanya, poc abans de la Reunificació alemanya . Aquesta vegada guanyaren els europeus per 1-0 gràcies a un penal convertit per Andreas Brehme en el minut 86 de joc.
