Chișinău és la capital de la República de Moldàvia. La ciutat està situada sobre el Bîc, un subafluent del Dnièster, a 47° 00′ de latitud nord i 28° 50′ de longitud est. L'alcalde actual és Andrei Năstase, que fou escollit el 3 de juny de 2018.
Fou fundada al començament del segle XV com un poble monestir. La ciutat fou capturada en el segle XVI pels turcs i el 1812 per Rússia, els quals la van convertir en el centre de la Bessaràbia . Romania va tenir el control de la ciutat entre 1918 i 1940, quan va passar a formar part de la Unió Soviètica. La ciutat compta amb universitat, hi ha l'Acadèmia de Ciències de Moldàvia i és un important centre de la indústria alimentària.
