Sestos fou la principal ciutat del Quersonès Traci, situada enfront d'Abydos. Fou el lloc habitual de pas d'Europa a Àsia durant segles fins que els romans van canviar a Cal·lípolis que des d'aleshores fou la ciutat principal de la regió.
La ciutat fou famosa en poesia per la història d'Hero i Leandre. Però la seva fama històrica és deguda al fet que fou aquí on el rei Xerxes I de Pèrsia va construir el pont per creuar l'Hel·lespont amb l'exèrcit, quan era governada pel tirà Artaictes .
