Oberkappel har et areal på 12 km². Kommunen ligger i den nordlige del af delstaten Østrig. Den grænser op til Tyskland og er meget nær Tjekkiet. De europæiske vandreruter E8 og E10 går gennem dette sted. E8 løber fra Irland via blandt andre Nederlandene gennem Tyskland, den nordlige del af Østrig og Slovakiet til grænserne til Polen og Ukraine, og inkluderer også en strækning i Bulgarien, med den fremtidige destination Istanbul i Tyrkiet. E10 kommer fra Lapland og løber via Finland, det tidligere Østtyskland, Tjekkiet og Østrig til Bozen/Bolzano i det nordlige Italien; Der er planer om at forlænge ruten via Frankrig og den spanske østkyst til Gibraltar.
