Kufstein er en lille, men kendt fæstningsby i den nordlige del af den østrigske delstat Tirol og hovedstad i det med samme navn. Midt i denne by med 18.000 indbyggere står Kufsteiner Fæstningen. Dette forsvarsanlæg var det første, der dengang skulle beskytte staten Tirol mod Bayern og Napoleon Bonaparte. På trods af de tykke mure og de mange kanoner, herunder to meget store, som kunne affyre kugler med en diameter på 50 cm, er fæstningen blevet indtaget flere gange.
