Lamoraal grev af Egmont er sandsynligvis den vigtigste figur i Zottegems historie. Han var herre af Zottegem og var en af de største feudale jordbesiddere i kejser Karl's tid. Efter ordre fra hertugen af Alva blev greven halshugget i 1568 på grund af hans bekymringer for at opnå religionsfrihed. På markedet finder du hans statue. Bemærkelsesværdigt er, at der kun 500 m væk står en identisk statue. Lidt længere væk ligger Egmontborgen.
Under Vor Frue Himmelfarts kirke på markedet findes Egmonts gravkammer, hvor de jordiske rester af ham og hans kone Sabina af Bayern opbevares.
