I det 14. århundrede ønskede hertug Jan II at takke Lierene for deres tjenester under hans kamp mod Mechelarerne. De kunne vælge deres belønning selv: en kvægmarked eller et universitet. De valgte stabelretten på kvæg, et valg der ikke gav Lier nogen problemer, da der kun blev tilladt én pr. region. Så flyttede kvægbesætningsmarkedet fra Wespelaar til Lier, og hertugen sukkede: "Åh, de fårhoveder". Så opstod spotnavnet 'fårhoveder' for indbyggerne i Lier.
