Den første sten til rådhuset blev lagt i 1428. I det 16. og 18. århundrede blev der udført store ombygninger. Mellem 1875 og 1880 kom der et nyt neogotisk rådhus. Efter ødelæggelserne under Første Verdenskrig 1914-1918, vendte arkitekterne tilbage til bygningsmæssige elementer hentet fra den regionale flamske renæssancestil. På facadevæggen danner murankre to gange årstallet 1923. Det nye klokketårn genopstod på gårdspladsen som et typisk flamsk og middelalderligt symbol på den urbane frihed.
