Boom opstod i begyndelsen af det 14. århundrede som sognet 'ad arborem', ved træet. Munkene fra Sint-Bernardabdij gravede allerede i en århundrede ler ud ved deres kloster i Hemiksem for at bage mursten. Den store brand i Antwerpen i 1546, hvor mange træhuse gik op i flammer, skabte et presserende behov for mere holdbart byggemateriale: mursten. Dette forårsagede væksten og blomstringen af murstenindustrien. Senere lettede udgravningen af kanalen fra Willebroek og af kanalen Bruxelles-Charleroi murstenstransporten, og efterspørgslen efter mursten steg. Overalt langs Rupel dukkede teglværker op.
