Ternat er en by og kommune i den belgiske provins Vlaams-Brabant. Kommunen ligger i Pajottenland og tæller over 15.481 indbyggere. Kommunen nævnes allerede i gamle skrifter under navne: Nath, Le Natte, Ternath. Toponymen fortæller os noget om dannelseshistorien: et beboelsesområde på fugtig bund eller "ter natte". Navnet Ternat bliver ofte forbundet med betydningen våd eller fugtig, men dette er lidt for enkelt. En anden betydningsforklaring kunne være: kanten eller grænsen af et verdsligt eller åndeligt domæne i Brabantgouw. Men man skal hellere tage alvorligt hensyn til en oprindelse i romansk, keltisk eller et forsvundet forhistorisk sprog.
