Den Kongelige Flamanske Opera var den næsten 100 år gamle selvstændige Antwerpen byopera indtil sin fusion i 1981 med den Kongelige Opera i Gent. Begge byoperaer blev en del af organisationen Opera for Vlaanderen, der i 2014 blev omdøbt til Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. I 1661 åbnede de antikvariske Aalmoezeniers Schouwburgh af den Gamle Fodbue på Grote Markt. Fra 1682 kunne antwerpenere stifte bekendtskab med operageneren, især med franske operaer. I 1709 flyttede Aalmoezeniers teatret til Tapissierspand, stedet hvor den nuværende Bourlaschouwburg ligger. Rejsende selskaber bragte hovedsageligt fransk, men også italiensk og hollandsk repertoire, både talte drama og opera. Efter en brand i 1746 blev Tapissierspand genopbygget som "Grand Théâtre" i 1753. Under den hollandske styrelse fik det promovering til "Théâtre Royal". Bygningen blev under alle omstændigheder for lille, og i 1829 fandt de sidste forestillinger sted. I 1834 åbnede den nye Bourlaschouwburg, hvor der stadig primært præsenteres fransk repertoire.
