Kort efter 2. verdenskrig (1947) dukkede de første fuldtræsbænke op ved Zeedijk i Middelkerke. Først grøn-hvide, senere malet i Middelkerkes farver: blå og hvid. Disse første massivt træbænke var et eget design af Middelkerkes indbygger Rudolf Lombaert og blev bygget af den lokale snedker Maurice Minu med ‘Congolese træ’. Med tidens gang er de forblevet uadskilleligt forbundet med billedet af turist Middelkerke.
