Kommunen Wentorf nær Hamburg ligger med sit område i den sydvestlige del af Herzogtum Lauenburg. Den grænser mod syd og vest op til Hamburg, mod nord til byen Reinbek, der ligger på den anden side af Bille og tilhører Kreis Stormarn, og mod øst til kommunerne Wohltorf og Börnsen. Kommunens område dækker 686,6 ha. Ved Wentorf udspringer Schulenbrooksbek.
Stedet blev første gang nævnt i 1217 under navnet Wenetdorp. Betydningen af navnet er åbenbar: "Wendendorf" var en landsby beboet af slaver. I løbet af sin omskiftelige historie har Wentorf gennemgået grundlæggende forandringer. Sammenhænge mellem fjerntliggende fortid og nutid kan kun sjældent erkendes.
